I wish more pugs were willing to help out newbie players instead of kicking at the first sign of weakness. Perhaps then we would have better players. Instead the bad players just stay bad and don't say anything for fear of being kicked/cussed out.

A while ago I was in a forming pug for Duncan's Dungeon in Slaver's Exile, HM. We had 7/8 and needed a tank to go. We'd already been out to the dungeon once and had to return because someone didn't have the dungeon unlocked....Grrr...even after everyone said they did in town.

We reformed the team back at town after finally figuring out who the culprit was. We had been waiting a long time to get started and just needed that elusive tank to start.

A tank finally joined, but he admitted that he'd never done the dungeon before. He pinged the common Obsidian tank build used here but said he'd need coaching. My team was willing to take him along and help him out although we were a bit nervous. (This was Duncan HM remember)

Well he died on the way running to the dungeon, but a 2nd runner got us there. Once inside, he turned out to be a decent tank. He wasn't perfect by any stretch but he got the job done. He was very good natured and had a good sense of humor when he died. Our monks and necro were very experienced with the dungeon and coached him. They would flag the map and tell him to "stand here" and he listened well to the instructions.

After the first few mobs he asked us to critique his performance honestly. He said please don't tell me I'm doing "fine" if I'm not. I want to learn and improve.

This tank was a good player. He wasn't the most polished tank I've seen, but it was a pleasure doing the dungeon with this pug. Everyone did their job and helped the team succeed and we finished Duncan in about an hour.

Apart from that of course everyone is completely free to give their own intepretation to a word . Just wanted to point out Noob originates from newbie

The derogatory word that starts with an N originated from negro.

Doesn't mean they are the same thing....

It was so long ago when the word first appeared people probably use it now in place of newb without knowing how it came to be. But Knightfall is right, Noob was originally used to offend people.

A bad player is one who cannot get his job done in the most efficient way possible, whilst maintaining an attitude others in his presence can tolerate.

IMHO, the only bad players are the ones who refuse to listen to constructive criticism or advise, taking it as a personal affront. They are stubborn, arrogant, and immature, destined to make mediocre accomplishments and weigh down their teams in any format. They also cause drama.

A new player may do badly at first, but if they're a good player, they'll learn from their mistakes, perhaps research better strategies, accept advice from their guild members or friends, and eventually do well.

I'll take a weak player over one with a bad attitude.

Then I'll take a weak player who is willing to listen and learn over one that does not, which kinda means he has a bad attitude.

The vast majority, I'd say.

There are so many different criteria for 'being a bad player' that the union of all of them most likely consists of every player in GW.
  • an unskilled player
  • a selfish player
  • a dishonest player
  • a player unable to learn from mistakes
  • a player with an attitude problem
  • a player unable to express himself in a coherent manner
  • a player with a real life who cannot play 80+ hours a week
  • anyone who disagrees with me about fashion issues

My new motto: "All players are bad, only some of them more obviously so"

When I think about bad 'player', I consider that to be someone who is bad at playing the game. Socialization is not a specific part of the gameplay, and how nice you are does not determine your effectiveness. You may want to consider a broader term to label your list that includes everyone who isn't the second coming of Christ.

I bet he would have been good at GW, too.

Cole Sear: I see bad people.
Malcolm Crowe: In your dreams?
[Cole shakes his head no]
Malcolm Crowe: While you're awake?
[Cole nods]
Malcolm Crowe: Bad people like, in graves? In coffins?
Cole Sear: Walking around like regular people. They don't see each other. They only see what they want to see. They don't know they're bad.
Malcolm Crowe: How often do you see them?
Cole Sear: All the time. They're everywhere.

Yes, that's a good and rational criterion, and one with which many players (with reservations me including) can agree. However (and I believe that we have discussed this before as well), it is not the only possible criterion. A guild of role playing people might have a vastly different opinion. The recent Mallyx debacle and the ensuing epic 'discussion' on these forums gave a very interesting insight to yet another - even more subjective - criterion that some people seem to apply, that only the small group of people to which the player happens to belong is 'leet' and everybody else is 'bad'. Quite honestly, people who consider themselves 'bad players' are few and far between, and it's a perfectly human condition that everybody picks a criterion that shows themselves in good light.

As long as an universally agreed and objective criterion for determining a bad player doesn't exist all we have are subjective opinions. They are useful in the sense that people with similar opinions will be able to gravitate together (unless, of course, they happen to be discordians ) and thus play the game as they wish it to be played, in a supportive environment. However, discerning the difference between opinions and facts is also desirable because taking one for the other is what flamewars are made of.
